For most NYC homes adding modern loads, 200A is the right answer — but plenty of apartments do fine on 100A.

If you're adding an EV charger, heat pump, induction range, or central air — or running out of breaker space — 200A service is almost always worth it and often required. If you're in a smaller apartment or home with gas appliances and no electrification plans, 100A may be perfectly adequate. The NYC angle

NYC's electrical future is one-directional: gas bans in new construction, Local Law 97 pushing buildings toward electrification, and EV adoption climbing. A 100A service that's adequate today can become the bottleneck the moment you add a charger or heat pump.
