The NYC summer ritual we can end: the window AC breaker trip
It's the most common dedicated circuit call we get, every June like clockwork: the window AC goes in, the breaker starts tripping, and someone spends the summer walking to the panel. Here's what's actually happening.
A window AC draws 5–12 amps continuously and surges higher at compressor start. In most NYC apartments, the outlet it's plugged into shares a 15A circuit with half the room — lamps, TV, chargers, maybe the refrigerator on older wiring. The combined load crosses the breaker's rating, and it does its job. Repeatedly.
The wrong fixes: a bigger breaker (dangerous — see our breaker page for why), unplugging everything else (a season-long inconvenience), or running an extension cord from another room (a fire risk with AC loads).
The right fix: a dedicated 20A circuit from the panel to a new outlet at the AC location. One appliance, one circuit, zero trips — permanently. Typical cost $350–$700, done in an afternoon, and it adds real value when you sell.
What gets a dedicated circuit — required vs. smart
Window / portable AC
The #1 NYC request. 20A dedicated circuit at the window location. Larger units (15,000+ BTU) may need 240V.
Kitchen appliances
Code requires dedicated circuits for refrigerators, microwaves, dishwashers, and disposals in renovations. Retrofit anytime.
Laundry — washer & dryer
Washer: dedicated 20A. Electric dryer: dedicated 240V/30A with NEMA 14-30 outlet. Both permitted work.
Electric range / induction
240V/40–50A circuit — increasingly requested as NYC kitchens move off gas. Pairs with panel capacity check.
Home office
Computers, monitors, UPS — a dedicated circuit isolates your work setup from kitchen surges and tripping risk.
Sump pump
A pump sharing a circuit that trips while you're away is how basements flood. Dedicated circuit, often with alarm.
Space heaters
1,500W on a shared circuit is a trip (or worse) waiting to happen. If a heater runs daily all winter, dedicate it.

Panel capacity check
A dedicated circuit needs an open breaker slot and headroom in your panel's total capacity. We verify both first — free. If the panel is full or marginal, you'll know before any quote, with options.
Route planning
We plan the wire run from panel to the new outlet location — through basements, joist bays, or conduit — choosing the path with the least wall opening. In most NYC apartments, openings are minimal to none.
DOB permit
New circuits are permitted work in NYC. We file, track, and close the permit; it's in the quote, never an add-on.
Installation
Circuit run, breaker installed, outlet placed exactly where the appliance lives. Most jobs: 2–6 hours, power off briefly during the panel connection only.
Inspection & labeling
DOB sign-off scheduled and attended by us. The new breaker is labeled, and you get the Certificate of Electrical Inspection for your records and insurer.
