Doorbell installation in NYC — what we handle

A doorbell sounds simple, but in NYC it rarely is. Aging transformers, low voltage at the button, plaster walls, building intercoms, and co-op rules all get in the way of a clean install. We handle the whole job — from a straightforward chime swap to a hardwired video doorbell on a fresh transformer. Get a free quote →

What we install: wired chime doorbells, wireless and battery doorbells, video doorbells (Ring, Nest, Eufy, Aqara), and smart doorbells tied into your phone and existing chime. We also repair doorbells that stopped working, replace failed transformers, and run new low-voltage wiring where none exists.

Types of doorbells we install

Wired (chime) doorbells: the classic setup — a button at the door, a transformer, and a chime inside. Reliable and never needs charging. Best when you already have doorbell wiring.

Wireless / battery doorbells: no wiring needed — the button talks to a plug-in or battery chime. A good fit for doors with no existing wiring, or for renters.

Video doorbells: Ring, Nest, Eufy and similar units add a camera, two-way talk, and motion alerts to your phone. Most hardwired models need 16–24V AC and enough power to run the camera — which is exactly where older NYC transformers fall short.

Smart doorbells: tie the doorbell into your phone, smart speakers, and existing chime, with app notifications and recording. We handle the wiring and chime connection; you control the app.

The transformer & low-voltage issue in older NYC buildings

Most doorbell problems in NYC come down to the transformer — the small device (often tucked in a basement, closet, or near the panel) that drops 120V down to the 16–24V a doorbell needs. Video doorbells draw far more power than an old mechanical chime ever did, and a decades-old 10V transformer simply cannot run a modern camera. The unit shows up dim, looping, randomly rebooting, or dead.

We test the voltage at the button, identify and replace undersized or failed transformers, add a chime connector or bypass kit where needed, and make sure the unit gets steady, code-compliant power. Where there is no usable wiring, we run new low-voltage cable cleanly through walls.

Doorbells for brownstones, apartments & multi-family

Brownstones & townhouses: plaster walls, original wiring, and a stoop-level entry make placement and wiring trickier. We mount the button securely, conceal new wiring, and match the install to the building's age. See brownstone electrical upgrades.

Apartments & co-ops: many buildings already have an intercom or entry system, and house rules limit changes at the shared entry. We work within building rules, coordinate with management where needed, and keep the install reversible where required.

Multi-family buildings: for owners and managers, we install and repair doorbell and entry wiring across units, upgrade transformers serving multiple buttons, and keep everything labeled and to code. See multi-family building electrical.

Frequently asked questions

A standard video doorbell install runs about $150–$350 when usable wiring and a healthy transformer are already in place. If the transformer needs upgrading or new low-voltage wiring is required, expect $300–$600+. We give a fixed price after testing the voltage at your door.

Often yes — but many older NYC doorbells run on a transformer that's too small for a camera. We test the voltage at the button; if it's under spec we replace the transformer or add a power kit so the doorbell runs reliably instead of looping or dropping offline.

Usually. Dead or intermittent doorbells are most often a failed transformer, a broken button, or a loose low-voltage connection. We trace the circuit, test each part, and repair what's failed, only recommending a new unit when the old one truly can't be saved.

Usually, though many buildings have an intercom or entry system and house rules about changes at the shared front door. We work within building rules, install at your unit door where allowed, and coordinate with management when needed.

Yes. Most video and smart doorbells can ring an existing chime with the right connector or bypass kit, or we can set up a plug-in or app chime instead. We confirm chime compatibility before installing.

A simple battery doorbell is DIY-friendly. Hardwired and video doorbells run into NYC's real issues — undersized transformers, no usable wiring, plaster walls, and chime compatibility. A licensed electrician makes sure it's powered correctly and to code so it works long-term.

What our customers say

★★★★★

"We added a Ring video doorbell to our Cobble Hill brownstone and the old transformer couldn't power it. MP Electric installed the right transformer, wired it to our existing chime, and it's been rock solid since. Clean work, no mess on the plaster."

Sam & Diane R. — Cobble Hill, Brooklyn

★★★★★

"Our Nest doorbell kept dropping offline. They tested the voltage at the button, found the transformer was badly undersized, replaced it, and now it works flawlessly with HomeKit. No one else even checked before quoting."

Anna L. — West Village, Manhattan

★★★★★

"They installed a video doorbell at our Sunnyside two-family and ran new low-voltage wiring for both entrances. Tidy, on time, and they walked us through the app before leaving. Exactly what we wanted."

Brian C. — Sunnyside, Queens
