Where surges actually come from — it's not mostly lightning

The lightning-bolt mental image misleads people about surge risk. The overwhelming majority of damaging surges are smaller, more frequent, and come from much closer: See detailed 2026 cost ranges →

  • Grid switching and restoration events. When ConEd switches loads, clears faults, or restores power after an outage, voltage transients ride into every connected home. The moment power comes back after a blackout is one of the highest-surge moments your electronics ever experience.
  • Inside your own home. Large motors cycling — AC compressors, refrigerators, sump pumps, elevator equipment in your building — generate small surges constantly. Individually trivial, cumulatively they degrade sensitive electronics over years.
  • Nearby strikes and utility events. Lightning doesn't need to hit your building; a strike blocks away induces surges on the lines feeding it.

Honest limits, stated plainly: no SPD guarantees survival of a direct lightning strike to your building — nothing does. What a quality Type 2 device demonstrably does is clamp the routine transients and grid events that cause the vast majority of real-world equipment damage. Effective surge protection also depends on sound grounding, which is why a grounding verification is part of every installation — and occasionally reveals a grounding issue worth fixing in its own right.
